Is Weed Legal in the UK? Full 2026 Legal Status Guide
Is weed legal in the UK? The short answer is no, recreational cannabis remains illegal across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Cannabis is classified as a Class B controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, meaning possession, cultivation, sale, and supply are all criminal offenses regardless of the amount involved.
Medical Cannabis: A Narrow Exception
In November 2018, the UK rescheduled cannabis for medical use, allowing specialist doctors — not GPs to prescribe cannabis-based medicinal products for a limited set of conditions where clinical evidence supports a benefit, such as treatment-resistant epilepsy, multiple sclerosis-related spasticity, and chemotherapy-induced nausea. Access remains restricted: most prescriptions come through private clinics rather than the NHS, and there is no route for tourists or visitors to obtain a prescription during a short stay.
Quick Facts
| Category | Status |
|---|---|
| Recreational use | Illegal |
| Medical use | Legal via specialist prescription only |
| Possession without prescription | Illegal (Class B offense) |
| Buying/selling | Illegal outside licensed medical supply |
| Tourist access | No routine access to prescriptions |
Penalties for Possession
Possession of cannabis can result in an unlimited fine, up to five years in prison, or both, though first-time offenders caught with small amounts are more commonly given a warning or an on-the-spot penalty. Supply and production carry far harsher sentences of up to 14 years.
What About CBD and Hemp Products?
Some hemp-derived products, such as CBD oil with negligible THC content, can be sold legally under separate regulations. This doesn’t make cannabis itself legal — legality depends entirely on THC content and product labeling, and unauthorized possession of THC-containing cannabis still carries real legal risk.
Bottom line: Recreational weed is illegal in the UK in 2026, with medical access tightly limited to prescribed patients only.

Where to Buy Marijuana in Leeds:
In Leeds, many students use marijuana, but street dealers can be challenging to find. To obtain cannabis, you will need to connect with a hook-up dealer whom you can contact to arrange a meeting or have the product delivered to you. Fortunately, with a significant student population, asking around areas popular among students can lead you to a hook-up. Additionally, exploring bars and clubs and inquiring with bartenders and club promoters can also help you find a dealer. The quality of marijuana is typically average, and prices vary among dealers. It is essential to be cautious of law enforcement during street transactions and avoid smoking in public view.
